Diversity in Leadership Scholarship

The Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) is committed to promoting access to leadership opportunities to develop and support underrepresented groups within the Canadian orthopaedic community.
In its sixth iteration, applicants may receive up to $500 CAD to attend a leadership course or conference of their choice. The scholarship is open to all membership, including residents, fellows, active surgeons and allied health professionals.

Eligibility:
• Be a member in good standing of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.
• Self-identify as an underrepresented group in Canadian orthopaedics.
• Demonstrate applicability for developing leadership skills.
• Interest to attend national or international in-person or virtual courses, events or workshops lasting less than 3 months, valued less than $5,000 CAD.

Non-Eligible :
• National or international in-person or virtual courses, events or workshops lasting more than 3 months, valued more than $5,000 CAD.
• Applicants requesting financial aid to finalize current coursework.
• Applicants who have received funding in the last iteration awarded in February 2023.
• Incomplete applications submitted.

Selection Process:
Scholarship recipients will be chosen by the COA Emerging Leaders Committee via blind review. All personal information, including but not limited to: name, sex, gender, race, geographical location, institutional affiliation will be omitted during the review. Information included in the review for consideration will be: personal essays capturing interest in leadership, career trajectory, course description and costs associated. The Selection Committee is composed of members from the COA Committee slate and invited colleagues.

A Note on Personal Information:
The COA is capturing the current member profile in order to better serve its membership. Personal information disclosed on the Scholarship Application Form are for internal matters only and will not be divulged to the public or Selection Committee.

Reporting:
Applicants may be invited to offer feedback on the course/event in the future for the COA Bulletin, Annual General Meeting or other communications.
