Across Canada, a new generation of orthopaedic surgeons is shaping the future of musculoskeletal care. Drawing on data from 17 academic training programs, the Canadian Orthopaedic Association tracks graduates as they enter the workforce, pursue specialized fellowship training, and expand expertise across the country and abroad.

These insights help identify workforce trends, guide resource allocation, and anticipate future needs – ensuring patients everywhere have access to high-quality orthopaedic care. With a significant portion of the current workforce approaching retirement, planning for the next generation of surgeons is critical to maintaining and growing Canada’s orthopaedic capacity.

COA Graduate Data 2025-2026

The 2025-2026 COA Graduate Snapshot draws on a decade of data from 17 academic programs. This report highlights key trends in graduate demographics, subspecialty choices and workforce distribution. With a record 32% of graduates identifying as female and steady interest in Canadian fellowships, indicators of evolving priorities are clear. Yet, the data also points to time-sensitive challenges: narrowing subspecialty interests, regional disparities and a looming retirement wave in five years that could reshape access to care. These findings are more than numbers – they’re a foundation for academic department planning, hiring strategy, employment advocacy and action.

COA Graduate Data 2024-2025

Across Canada, people completing orthopaedic training are shaping the future of musculoskeletal care. Drawing on data from 17 academic programs, the Canadian Orthopaedic Association reports that from 2015 to 2024, 675 graduates completed their training nationwide. In 2024, nearly half secured full-time positions in Canada, while others took their skills abroad.

Many graduates continue their education through fellowship training, reflecting a commitment to specialized skills and advanced patient care. This year’s report explores employment trends, fellowship training, and geographic distribution, offering insights that help shape the orthopaedic workforce and strengthen patient care across Canada.
