COA Global Surgery (COAGS)

Many Canadian orthopaedic surgeons use their surgical, educational and research talents to help reduce the burden of musculoskeletal disease in the world, particularly in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), disaster relief zones, and in vulnerable populations with limited access to orthopaedic care. The COA recognizes the importance of bringing Canadian orthopaedic surgeons together to share ideas and promote opportunities for providing global humanitarian care, thus a committee was formed as a means of bringing Canadian orthopaedic surgeons together to share ideas and promote opportunities for providing global humanitarian care.

Background

This committee was first established as an ad hoc committee in 1979, then became a special committee of the COA under the name Orthopaedics Overseas Canada (OOC) in 1990. OOC was eventually disbanded, and in 2014, the same initiative was reborn as the COA Global Surgery (COAGS) Committee with the support of the COA Executive and the COA President at the time, Dr. Bas Masri.

Orthopaedics Overseas Canada (OOC)

CARE and MEDICO formed a Canadian Medical Advisory Board (CARE-MEDICO of Canada) n 1963. The orthopaedic division of this effort became known as Orthopaedic Overseas, the first liaison officer appointed by the COA to this organization was Dr. R.B. Salter (1963). A formal committee was struck in 1974 – Chairman: D. Gibson, Members: W. Kirkaldy-Willis, J. Fowles. Thereafter, Dr. Gibson served as a liaison member to Ortho. Training in Developing Countries (1975 and 1976), liaison member to World Orthopaedic Concern (1977) and Orthopaedic Overseas (1978) An ad hoc committee was established in 1979, becoming a Standing Committee in 1984. In 19990, the name was changed to “Orthopaedic Overseas Canada  (OOC)” and became a special committee of the COA.
