Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI)

CIHI is an independent, not-for-profit organization that provides essential information on Canada’s health system and the health of Canadians. CIHI manages the Canadian Joint Replacement Registry and provides information including hip and knee replacement statistics, Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), wait times, and prosthesis information.

Data elements

The CJRR minimum data set aligns with the standard set by the International Society of Arthroplasty Registers.

Data availability

CJRR data is based on surgery date and collected by fiscal year (April 1 to March 31).

  • Most recent year full year available: fiscal year 2022-2023

Canadian Joint Replacement Registry (CJRR)

In 2001, CIHI in collaboration with the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) launched CJRR, which collects patient, surgical and prosthesis (implant) information on hip and knee replacement surgeries performed in Canada. The CJRR is managed by CIHI and guided by its Advisory Committee, which is made up of orthopedic surgeons, representatives from provincial ministries of health, the COA, the Canadian Orthopaedic Nurses Association, and the Arthritis Society of Canada. The CJRR Advisory Committee is chaired by Dr. Eric Bohm and co-chaired by Dr. Jason Werle. Click on the topics below to learn more.

PROMs National Standards

CIHI has published the Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Data Collection Manual: Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, 2021. This manual outlines national data collection guidelines and recommendations for

  • PROMs instruments: EQ-5D-5L, the Oxford Hip Score (OHS), and the Oxford Knee Score (OKS)
  • 2 survey collection time points: pre-surgery and 1 year post-surgery
  • Minimum data set: additional information to collect with a PROMs tool

CIHI’s CJRR Advisory Committee and PROMs Hip and Knee Replacements Working Group endorse these standards. CIHI is facilitating the uptake of these national PROMs standards to enable pan-Canadian PROMs comparative reporting.

CIHI has obtained licences to use the OHS, OKS and EQ-5D-5L and is permitted to sub-licence these instruments to Canadian hospitals and providers for use in routine care (i.e., not for research or commercial purposes). For more information contact proms@cihi.ca.

PROMs International Standards

As part of the OECD’s Patient-Reported Indicator Surveys (PaRIS) initiative, CIHI and the OECD co-chair the international Working Group on Patient-Reported Indicators for Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery. The national standards align with the international data collection standards developed by this Working Group.

The international data collection standards are endorsed by: International Society of Arthroplasty Registries, World Confederation for Physical Therapy, International Society of Orthopaedic Centers, National Joint Registry, and European Federation of National Associations of Orthopaedics and Traumatology.

OECD Health at a Glance Report

The latest comparable data and trends on hip and knee PROMs from OECD countries, including Canada, are featured in OECD’s Health at a Glance 2021. This edition has a special focus on the health impact of COVID-19 in OECD countries.

Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures (PROMs)

PROMs are used to assess a patient’s health status at a particular point in time and can provide insight on the effectiveness of care from the patient’s perspective. In 2015, CIHI’s PROMs Program began to support the development, advancement, and use of PROMs data collection standards and reporting in priority topics. The current focus is on hip and knee replacement surgeries.
